His Holiness arrives in CA, to recieve special Amnesty award

Dharamsala - His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be honored with a special human rights award from Amnesty International in Long Beach, California on Wednesday as the international rights group celebrates its 50th anniversary. "Shine a Light on Human Rights" award will be bestowed upon the Tibetan leader who arrived Monday in California, two days after his scheduled arrival due to “sore throat”.

He had been advised by doctors in Tokyo to rest before making the long flight to California. 

"We are privileged to celebrate Amnesty International's 50th anniversary by honoring one of the most influential figures today," said Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA. "His Holiness the Dali Lama is the quintessential embodiment of human rights and a testament to the power of the individual spirit."

The Tibetan leader will deliver a keynote address during the ceremony. The leader will answer questions from AIUSA student leaders and activists.
The award ceremony will conclude with a human rights fair on the outdoor patio of the Carpenter Center.

"After hearing inspirational words from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, attendees will be inspired to make a difference in moving human rights forward globally," said Rini Chakraborty, AIUSA Western regional director.

The Tibetan leader’s sold out appearances at UCLA on Monday (May 2) and Long Beach Terrace Theater on Sunday (May 1) had to be called off.
