His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulates New Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak

25^th October 2022: Dharamshala: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written today to Rishi Sunak to congratulate him on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“Over the last several decades,” his letter went on, “I have been able to visit the United Kingdom quite regularly, and have always been deeply touched by the affection and friendship shown to me by people from all walks of life. I have also been encouraged by their enthusiasm and interest in my effort to promote a sense of the oneness of humanity and closer inter-religious harmony.

“At the same time, may I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the people of Great Britain for their consistent support for the Tibetan people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity.

“These are very challenging times,” His Holiness concluded. “In today’s highly interdependent world, what happens in one part of the world affects us all. I therefore wish you every success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of the United Kingdom, and in working to build a more peaceful world.”

Sikyong Penpa Tsering Congratulates Newly Elected Prime Minister of UK

Dharamshala: Sikyong Penpa Tsering has written to H.E Rishi Sunak, newly elected Prime Minister of the UK, congratulating him as he takes charge of the office.

Sikyong writes, “On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people, I congratulate you on becoming the new prime minister of the UK. The United Kingdom and Tibet share a long-term historical relationship, and since the early 1960s, the UK has been a host to a growing community of Tibetan people. Successive governments, our friends in parliament and the community of peace-loving people in Britain have ensured the continuation of this longstanding support for Tibet and the Tibetan people”.

Sikyong expressed admiration for the UK government’s global commitment to promoting Human Rights globally, including implementing the UK Global Human Right Sanctions Regime in 2020. He further extended his gratitude for the longstanding support and friendship of the United Kingdom, adding, “furthermore, as you work towards the imminent challenges facing the British government and people, we hope that you will lend your pivotal voice to the just cause of Tibet and help bring a definite end to China’s decades-long repression of Tibetans inside Tibet. Once again, on behalf of the Tibetan people inside Tibet and worldwide, please accept our sincere gratitude and regards.

Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel Congratulates UK’s PM Rishi Sunak

Dharamshala: Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, on behalf of Tibetans all over the world and the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile expressed his heartfelt congratulation to PM Rishi Sunak on being elected as the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

He wrote, “Tibetans all over the world will always be eternally grateful to the people and the government of the United Kingdom for the constant and unwavering support to the non-violent struggle of Tibet.”

“Your Excellency, I wish you the best for your noble future endeavours towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the UK. We look forward to a very effective tenure under your leadership.”

Rishi Sunak is a British politician who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 25 October 2022 and Leader of the Conservative Party since 24 October 2022. Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020, and he has been Member of Parliament for Richmond since 2015. He is the youngest British prime minister since the 19th century and the first prime minister to be appointed by King Charles III in his reign.

After Truss`s resignation amid a credibility crisis, Sunak was elected unopposed as Leader of the Conservative Party. He is the first British Asian and Hindu to hold the position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
