Saka Dawa marked with protest in Tibet

A Tibetan monk from Dargyal monastery, eastern Tibet called for Tibet’s freedom at a large religious congregation on the 15th day of Saka Dawa in Kardze town at around 7 am, yesterday.

According to information received by Phayul.com, 37-year old Ngawang Lobsang threw leaflets demanding freedom in Tibet while raising slogans for the long life and return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at an early morning gathering of religious devotees. Eyewitnesses confirm that as Ngawang Lobsang started drawing the crowd’s attention, he kneeled down on the ground and continued calling for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama with hands closed in prayers before he was taken away by Chinese security personnel.

Ngawang Lobsang had planned his demonstration in advance while fully understanding the risks he faced to his life and security. Yeshi Lobsang, a monk from Tehor Khamtsen, Sera Je, south India told Phayul.com that a day before Ngawang Lobsang took out the protest, he had indicated to his colleagues of undertaking an important activity.

“On June 14, Ngawang Lobsang printed multiple copies of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s pictures and placed them on the altar in his room. He then offered all his savings to the monastery, requesting the monks to pray for the success of an important activity that he was planning.”

There is no information on his whereabouts following arrest.

The 15th day of the Saka Dawa month is observed by Buddhists for performing religious and meritorious activities as it commemorates Lord Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. The Chinese Government had earlier prohibited the usual practice of observing Nyung Ne (fasting) during Saka Dawa at Drepung monastery, central Tibet.
