Tibetan protest on International Human Rights Day

Coinciding with the International Human Rights Day, on the 10th of December, the Tibetan Community of Switzerland & Liechtenstein (TCSL) led a peace march in Geneva and staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the UN offices in Geneva to protest over poor human rights situation in Tibet. Over eight hundred Tibetans and supporters had gathered for the day.


The rallyists, gathered for the day on the lakeshore of Geneva, at the seat of UN Human Rights High Commissioner´s Office, Palais Wilson. The opening speech was made by the vice-president of the TCSL Mr. Lhaning Pema, followed by slogan shouting demanding UN to send fact finding mission to Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet.

The gathered crowd marched from Palais Wilson to Place of the Nations, the seat of the UN offices in Europe. In front the UN offices, a minute of silence was observed in respect to the martyrs of recent self immolations followed by the Tibetan National anthem from the Folklore Ensemble of the TCSL. The rally was addressed by the President of the TCSL Mr. Tenzin Nyingbu, in which he stated UN proclamation to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human right in 1948- to which all people an nation should live, is unfortunately even after 67 years not practiced in Tibet. On the contrary human rights condition in Tibet is deteriorating and Tibetans are living under repressive environment which resulted in over 140 self immolations in Tibet. 

The crowd was also addressed by the representative of H.H. Dalai Lama Mr. Ngodup la, European Tibetan Chitue, representative of the Tibetan youth Association in Europe, President of GSTF, representative of the Tibetan Women Association. A speech from Mr. René Longet and the petition letter to UN was also read to the crowd.

After many rounds of slogan shoutings, the gathered masses offered a prayer which was led by Khen Rinpoche of Rikon Tibet institute. The rally ended at 16.00 hr. with Sangsol and the words of thanks from the vice President of TCSL.
